Chapter 5 Writing Essentials

This was a really short chapter. So, I probably won't be writing much. One thing that I gained from Routman is when she says edtiting really doesn't matter. My students don't do much of their own editing unless it is capitalization or punctuation. I edit their spelling for them if they are publishing their work in a book. If they are typing, of course there is spell check there for them already. It is important not to focus so much time on editiing because it is the quality of the wriitng that matters not the students' ediiting mistakes.
I also like Routman's idea of making words with tiles. During my LA station time, my students make words. I copied letters for them that are similar to tiles for the student's who need more of the hands on approach and are more visual learners. They need to make words and record the words made on sheets of paper only using 5 letters.
At the end of the year, this year, I started modeling my own fictional writing. It was fun becuase I had my students help me with it. The dialogue that they came up with was phenomenal.
I appreciate Routman's lesson focus'. I also liked how she gave me ideas to have my students write about. It would be neat to have students be responsible for coming up with their own classroom, hallway, and lunchroom procedures. I also liked the idea of the school alphabet book, giving advice to next years' students (something now that I wish I would have had them do, but could have my summer school kids do), writing recipes, and what to do if's. And, the list of great ideas goes on.......
